Wholesale 98% Mandelic Acid Powder CAS 90-64-2
What is mandelic acid?
Mandelic acid, also known as α-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, is a naturally occurring organic acid. It is the only lipophilic AHA among AHAs and has a larger molecular weight than first-generation AHAs. Mandelic acid is an α-hydroxy acid (AHA) containing an aromatic group, also belonging to the aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid family. Mandelic acid was originally isolated from the seeds of the almond (apricot kernel), hence its name. It is also found in some other fruits and plants.Currently, industrial production of mandelic acid on a large scale primarily occurs through chemical synthesis or biofermentation.

Mandelic acid has a high affinity for the skin and is highly permeable. It is milder than glycolic acid and can inhibit the growth of various bacteria. Its excellent lipophilicity and antibacterial properties make it effective in inhibiting Propionibacterium acnes and improving obstruction of the sebaceous ducts of the hair follicles. It also has significant therapeutic effects on photoaging and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Skincare Benefits of Mandelic Acid
As a first-generation AHA, mandelic acid exhibits remarkable anti-acne properties. Other alpha-hydroxy acids are water-soluble and are easily blocked by oil upon contact with the skin, hindering their penetration. However, mandelic acid, being fat-soluble, penetrates deep into the sebaceous glands, reducing oil production and regulating Propionibacterium acnes, the source of acne. The smaller the molecular weight, the easier it is to penetrate the skin and take effect, which can lead to irritation. For example, glycolic acid, with its smallest molecular weight, has strong exfoliating properties and excellent skin rejuvenation. However, if you are inexperienced in acid peeling and start with a high concentration, it can cause stinging, redness, and even darkening of the skin. Its higher molecular weight makes mandelic acid more gentle.
Exfoliant
Mandelic acid accelerates cell turnover and acts as a powerful exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. Compared to other exfoliants, mandelic acid has a higher molecular weight. It penetrates the skin slowly, making it less irritating. Its chemical properties also give it advantages over abrasive physical exfoliants.
Controls Acne
Mandelic acid dissolves dead skin cells, stimulates skin turnover, and stimulates new skin regeneration. It also has antibacterial properties, combating Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria. It also regulates sebum production, thereby controlling acne.
Reduces Hyperpigmentation
Mandelic acid's increased cell turnover and exfoliating properties mean it removes melanin deposited in the stratum corneum, brightening the skin. Therefore, mandelic acid can reduce hyperpigmentation (such as dark spots, melasma, and sun damage).
Unclogging Pores and Enhancing Penetration
Unclogging pores can address many skin concerns. Mandelic acid penetrates pores to remove excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. This helps control acne and facilitates better penetration of other skincare products.
Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Mandelic acid increases collagen in the skin, helping to improve skin's elasticity and protect it from fine lines and wrinkles.
Rebuilding the Skin Barrier
Mandelic acid can repair the skin barrier, leaving it looking youthful.

Main Applications of Mandelic Acid
Skincare and Cosmetics
Mildness: Compared to other common AHAs (such as fructose and glycolic acid), mandelic acid has a larger molecular weight, resulting in slower skin penetration and less irritation, making it ideal for sensitive skin and those new to acid peeling. Like other AHAs, mandelic acid loosens the connections between keratinocytes, promoting exfoliation, brightening the skin and reducing roughness and acne. Furthermore, its lipophilic benzene rings have a greater affinity for oils and help unclog pores, making it effective for acne (especially inflammatory acne).
Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory: Its inherent antibacterial properties help inhibit Propionibacterium acnes and reduce inflammation.
Daily Skincare: It is used as an active ingredient in lotions, serums, creams, and other products to improve uneven skin tone, fine lines, and enlarged pores.

Pharmaceuticals
Mechanism of Action: After metabolism in the body, mandelic acid is excreted virtually unchanged through the kidneys in the urine, with the benzene ring in its structure. During this process, it alters the urine's pH environment and directly inhibits and kills various Gram-negative (such as Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria in the urinary tract.
Indications: Commonly used to treat acute and chronic urinary tract infections, such as cystitis and urethritis. Because it acts through urinary excretion, it is a systemic urinary antibacterial agent, not a topical medication. It is typically used in the form of mandelic acid or its salts.
Chemicals and Other Fields
Organic Synthesis Intermediate: Mandelic acid is an important chiral intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and fine chemicals.
Chiral Resolution: Because it is a chiral molecule, mandelic acid and its derivatives are often used to resolve racemic mixtures to obtain optically pure compounds of a single configuration.
